A few kilometers away from Agrigento, Mr. Giuseppe di Vincenzo in the mid-90s decided to take advantage of the fact that he was in a hillside area near the sea, to start a production of Mandranova extra virgin olive oil founding the Azienda Agricola Mandranova, one of the most interesting realities in Sicily. Currently is also sold with the innovative Bag in Box oil conservation method.

An oil, the Mandranova, of high quality mono-varietal extra virgin origin, coming from the 50 hectares of centuries-old olive trees of the company of Giuseppe di Vicenzo. Taking full advantage of the climate and the territory to which it belongs, he has managed to achieve an amazing quality.

Due to the excellent quality achieved thanks to the dedication and the territory, the company of Giuseppe di Vicenzo has also modernized its innovative cultivation, harvesting and conservation methods over the years. First and foremost the Bag in Box oil packaging, a preservation method up to date and better than the previous methods in tin or glass.

Bag in Box Oil? What’s that? Where is the tin?

Consisting of a plastic bag with a tapping faucet and enclosed in a cardboard box, the Bag in Box is presented as a revolutionary technology whose purpose is to preserve your oil, while keeping its properties intact more reliably than the old conservation methods. In a truly Eco-friendly and easy-to-dispose perspective. The bag has a low oxygen permeability and is able to prevent the light from damaging the product. Together with the tapping faucet it guarantee the vacuum for your Sicilian extra virgin olive oil.

According to a recent study by the University of Ioannina, in Greece, extra virgin olive oil packaged in Bag in a Box containers has kept its quality intact for longer periods of time and in more difficult conditions than that stored in tin-plated steel containers. “… at abusive temperatures the bag-in-box container proved superior to the can, as documented by all four values of olive oil quality parameters,” write the study researchers led by Professor Kontominas, confirming that the bag-in-box oil packaging system is in effect practical and innovative. It manages to combine the practicality of the tap for serving with a particular series of measures that prevent oil oxidation, keeping its original characteristics intact.

Mandranova Oil: bag in box oil from a young olive grove, respecting those who preceded it

The olive grove from which the Mandranova oil is produced looks like a real green oasis. A young olive grove, inside which can be occasionally found secular olive trees, specially maintained by the company to confirm the work of those who preceded them. Mandranova products are born from a mix of youth and respect for tradition, among which almonds and preserves can be found in addition to bag-in-box extra virgin olive oil, expressions of a wonderful land like Sicily.

Bag-in-box Extra Virgin Olive Oil: Yes or No?

The two major criticisms that have been brought to attention about bag-in-box technology for extra virgin olive oil mainly concerns the materials of some bags (to be honest, only the extremely cheap ones) due to the concentration of phthalates inside them.

These phthalates necessary for the bag-in-box technology for olive oil, but alo for wine, are potentially carcinogenic substances which, according to some researches, could be transferred in minimal amount to the oil. However, the bags are coated with a film with very low contamination rate, minimizing the risk for the oil to be contaminated by these substances.

The second criticism brought to the bag-in-box storage technology for olive oil is more linked to tradition. We have always been used to by our oil in cans, at most in glass, and every novelty can bring with it a natural instinct of “defense” and therefore mistrust.
What the studies have shown is that the bag-in-box technology is currently and to all intents and purposes the most valid solution for the conservation of extra virgin olive oil, provided that quality materials with low contamination rate are chosen, in full respect of the customer and the quality of the oil.
